The Anglo-Nubian goat, or simply Nubian goat in the United States, originated in England as a cross between the Old English Milch Goat and the Zariby and Nubian bucks imported from India, Russia, and Egypt.

 

Its distinguishing characteristics include large, long, pendulous ears that can extend beyond the muzzle and a “Roman” nose. They have short, fine, glossy hair. There is no standard color for this breed, solid or patterned, is usual. With the elongated ears and sleek body, they are also known as “Lop-eared goat” or “Greyhound goat”. These are social, friendly, outgoing and vocal animals. They love being around humans and are known to call for their owner. To show their affection for their humans, Nubian goats display neck and side stroking behaviors.

 

They can live in very hot climates and have a longer breeding season than other dairy goats. This extended breeding season means that they can produce milk nearly year round, another reason for their popularity as dairy goats. Due to their size they are considered a dual-purpose breed. The milk is known for the high butterfat content, (5% or more on average) which makes it higher in flavor than lower fat milks. The combination of flavor and high butterfat content are two qualities make it perfect for cheese production. Milk production by volume, is less than other dairy goat breeds.
